Many people understand that website domain names have value. Over the past few years, I have found that the value of domain names has specific criteria. All of them have a dollar value, and a domain name that reflects your purpose might be more valuable.
When choosing a domain name for your blog, business, or personal use, there are attributes that make use of the website easier by consumers. And there are some that make them more valuable. Usually they are the same specifications.
Here are some pointers:
1. The name should be memorable. A person looking for your content who can remember the name of your website off the top of their head makes finding you easier. It is like an 800 phone number that you never have to look up. Direct type in traffic makes things easier for everyone.
2. The name should be no more than two or three words. This relates to being memorable. And it is also related to value. The shorter the domain name, commonly the more valuable it is. This also means keeping the number of letters minimized. GoForIt.com is easier and more valuable than GoddessFlavorsInc.com.
3. If you know what words a person will be searching for to access your website, those words inside your domain name make it easier to remember, more valuable, and easier to find on a search engine. Google Keywords is an excellent tool for discovering what key words are best to compete with as well as drive traffic to your website.
4. The domain name will assist in branding. Being memorable is part of branding. Being known for who you are and what you do is branding. If you read the domain name TargetShootingPros.com, you would know a lot about them immediately. Some names, like BlueGreenDoor.com, there is no real knowledge of what the company does. It is a name that is short, memorable, and identifies the company.
5. If your website is to work locally, as in your city, the city name in the domain name can be very helpful in many ways. If your name were DenverIceCream.com, persons searching for this product while in Denver would likely find this domain on the first page of a search. Search engines love local. They think it provides quality search results to their searchers.
These are basic tips. Of course there are times when these tips do not apply. Most often they do. Domain name investors work with the above guidelines to find great names. Overall, being memorable and easy to type in is what your customers will want to see.
